Stairlift for the Church of the Holy Spirit
In the heart of Copenhagen lies Helligåndskirken – a historic Lutheran church where architecture, functionality and accessibility must go hand in hand. JEMA LIFT has supplied Helligåndskirken with a bespoke stairlift, developed specifically to suit the church’s physical layout and requirements.
The project was carried out in collaboration with Rønnow Arkitekter A/S and is a fine example of one of JEMA LIFT’s core competencies: developing bespoke lifting solutions for buildings and environments where a standard solution does not necessarily fit.
A stairlift tailored to the building
In historic and architecturally significant buildings, there are specific requirements for new technical installations. A lift must, first and foremost, be safe and functional, but at the same time, the solution must be able to blend in with the existing surroundings.
For Helligåndskirken, a bespoke hydraulic stairlift with a platform measuring 1,700 x 1,100 mm was therefore developed. The solution has a lifting capacity of 350 kg and a travel distance of 330 mm, equivalent to two steps with a step height of 165 mm.
The stairlift is also designed with a 300 mm extension. The combination of the lifting motion and the extension makes it possible to create a solution tailored to the specific access conditions on site.
Hydraulic lift designed for stability and a long service life
The stairlift’s design is based on JEMA LIFT’s many years of experience with hydraulic lifting tables and bespoke solutions. The arms are made of high-strength steel, which gives the lifting table excellent lateral stability. The moving joints are fitted with long bushings and grease nipples, which reduce the load on exposed components and contribute to a long service life and minimal maintenance.
The electro-hydraulic power unit is located externally, and the system operates on a 24 V DC control voltage. The control system is deadman-operated and comprises a control console as well as separate pushbuttons for operating the stair lift. A battery backup is also provided.
Safety has been incorporated as an integral part of the design. Among other features, the stair lift is fitted with a safety skirt, and the solution has been designed specifically for use in the church.
The stair lift is supplied fully tested and CE-marked in accordance with the relevant requirements, together with the accompanying documentation and test certificate.
The project at Helligåndskirken demonstrates how a relatively small difference in level can require a well-thought-out technical solution when the installation is to be integrated into an existing building.

We calculate and design the solution before it is manufactured at our factory in Sahl near Bjerringbro. This allows us to take into account both the technical requirements and the architectural surroundings.
